StreetVet is a volunteer team of dedicated registered vets and veterinary nurses who help those experiencing homelessness by providing health care for their dogs.
Homelessness is a growing problem in the UK and an increasing number of homeless people share their lives with dogs. Most of us can imagine how heartbreaking it would be to part with a beloved dog. People facing homelessness often have to choose between accommodation and their dog – and many opt for life on the streets rather than parting with their animals, as shelters and temporary accommodation will not permit them.
StreetVet step in to provide free veterinary care to the pets of homeless people on the streets of London, Brighton, Bristol, Birmingham, Cambridge, Plymouth, Southampton, Cornwall and Cheltenham.
Life on the streets is tough for both people and pets and it can be hard for homeless pet owners to access veterinary care. The animals’ health is very often their highest priority and they will make personal sacrifices in order to ensure it. The bond between homeless people and their canine companions cannot be underestimated. The work of StreetVet in providing treatment free of charge, enables the dogs to continue to provide invaluable companionship to their owners – thus supporting the wellbeing of both pets and people.
